Pairing a Bluetooth Controller

To pair a bluetooth controller, you need to connect the Bluetooth Adapter first. We suggest to perform a shutdown beforehand and disconnect the RetroEngine from power.

Connect the OTG adapter to the Bluetooth adapter:

Then connect the OTG adapter with the Bluetooth adapter to the RetroEngine into the port labeled "USB OTG Expansion". Now reconnect power. It should look like this:

You need to use a configured controller or a keyboard to proceed.

If you have no access to a keyboard and you only received Bluetooth controllers with your RetroEngine, you can use the touch device based "Mobile Gamepad" as described in the "RetroEngine Controllers" subsection. Pls. also refer to the "Finding your IP Address" section to be able to access the "Mobile Gamepad".

Go to the RetroPie menu and enter it. Select the top entry, labeled "Bluetooth":

Enter the Bluetooth menu. Now prepare your RetroEngine Bluetooth gamepad for pairing. The gamepad needs to be charged and switched on by briefly pressing the "RE" button. Now hold the "RE" button and "X" simultaneously until the "RE" Button LEDs start flashing more quickly. Release both buttons. If you want to connect a 3rd party device, similarly switch it to "Pairing Mode". Now select the "Register and Connect to Bluetooth" function.

Attention: You may need to experiment to find the correct controller button to comfirm- unfortunately, at this point it changes depending on the controller used. "Enter" is used on keyboards

The RetroEngine will look for new Bluetooth devices and eventually show a screen like this:

Confirm "OK". The next screen will come up:

Authentication Mode

Don't change anything, just confirm the first option (Display Yes/No). If all works well, you will get a success message:

Pairing Success

Now leave the menu by confirming "OK" and leave the Bluetooth Setup using the "Back" and "Cancel" options on the following screens. You can verify that everything works because you will already be able to change the selection in these menus with the Bluetooth controller.

In order to use the controller to navigate Emulationstation and to activate it for games, it still needs to be configured via the Emulationstation Main Menu -> "Configure Input" option, which is accessible with "Start" or "F1" from the Emulationstation platform selection menu. This process is explained with more detail in the "Configuring a Controller" subsection.
